NATURAL CONNECTION THROUGH YOGA
I like the title of this magazine: Natural Connections... Isn't that indeed what we all striving for, whether we are conscious of it or not... Natural connection between our body, mind and spirit. Natural connection with our bodies, our breath, with each other... Natural connection between the dis-ease from which we suffer, the level of stress in our lives, and our emotional response to events we had to deal with in the past or in our current situation... Natural connection between our experiences in life and our deeply rooted personal beliefs...
Most of us have picked up a certain attitude to life based more on self defence than trust. This has been imprinted in our bodies, in our mind, in our psyche. We need to re-educate ourselves, unlearn these patterns, unravel and free our energy from these life smothering habits. Now is the perfect time to awaken to to a new way of thinking, being, as if yesterday never happened...Now is the perfect time to develop a fresh awareness, to enquire with a beginner's mind as to a new way to be, to stand, a new way to breathe, a new way to communicate with each other and with our own bodies.
Often, our biggest stumbling block is thinking we know more than we actually do and not allowing ourselves the virginity of a blank page. No matter how much experience we have of life and of the holistic way of being, there is always much more to learn or rather to unlearn. There is something sacred and beautiful about allowing ourselves to start again with the vulnerability and the openness of mind and spirit of a new born baby, embracing each experience for the very first time.
The first step is to stop in your tracks. Whatever you are doing, slow it down. Imagine this is the very first time that you do what you do, the very first time that you move your body in this way, that you meet this person, the very first time that you taste this food. Allow yourselves to really feel the impact of each movement, each sound, each thought. Go right back down to the bones, the organs, the nervous system and all the other internal systems that supports you through life. Allow yourself to be in awe of the miracle of Life and find your breath again. Allow it to flow freely through the whole body, and feel how this helps you to connect with yourself at a very deep level.
In yoga, we have an opportunity
to leave behind our usual world in the fast track of life and to move onto
a scenic country lane leading to a quiet beach from which we can witness
the most amazing sunset. The colours of our Aura can once again find their
bounce and our body can teach itself a new way to move based on inner flexibility
and yielding our way through life instead of pushing and forcing our body
to achieve an outer appearance which does not reflect our inner world and
natural limitations.
Since being introduced to Yoga
twenty years ago, it has brought me a wealth of knowledge, wisdom and growth.
Yoga means union of body, mind and spirit. It is alchemy in movement. It
gives us tools to transform negative events, feelings and emotions into
beautiful pots of gold. We learn to slow down, breathe, meditate and clear
the cobwebs from our energetical bodies, gradually peeling off the veils
that prevented us from seeing our own inner beauty and to connect with
our own inner strength.
What matters in Yoga is the journey, which is internal, yet manifests itself through our whole body: physical, emotional, mental & spiritual.
There are many forms of Yoga and as many styles as there are teachers. It is important to shop around and find the right teacher for yourself.
A good teacher is able to put aside
their Ego and to connect with their clients and students heart to heart.
They inspire you; help you to connect with your own strength, your own
power and to find your own path. They have delved deep enough into their
own shadows and cleared enough of their own cobwebs, they have gathered
enough wisdom through years and years of soul searching to serve as spiritual
guides and mentors without stepping into Ego.
And through their gentle guidance,
you grow.

BRIDGING THE GAP - “ME” TIME
What I love about Panorama is that
it is building a bridge between us as members of our local community.
This sense of belonging is often
missing from our modern lives. The small local shops are gone to make place
for giant shopping centres where no-one knows you. Neighbours have come
and gone over the years and we are all so busy with our lives we hardly
have time to find out the name of those who live close to us.
Over the last fifteen years living
and teaching yoga in Sandyford, I have witnessed the increased level
of stress in the lives of our local residents. Many are on the road all
day long and try to juggle with all their responsibilities, all the roles
they play in our society. Work is at the forefront of their lives and everything
else has to somehow fit around it.
Gone are the days when we had time
to sit together as a family. A lot of parents come home late because of
overtime and traffic jam, babies are in the crèche most days, children
attend after school activities several times per week, the extended family
is miles away and there never seems to be enough time to do everything.
This constant pressure leads us to take short cuts: we eat convenience
food in front of the television, or grab a quick sandwich at the petrol
station and we take tablets to relieve our headache or soothe our sore
stomach.
Could it be that our indigestion,
headache or insomnia are warning us that if we drive our vehicle
at full speed continuously, without taking the time to stop for re-fill,
we will inevitably break down on our way to yet another urgent appointment.
Sometimes it all feel so intense,
like an internal volcano ready to erupt at the least additional demand
on our nervous system, and there just never seems to be any “me time”
in this busy week.
If only we could find time
to stop once in a while to catch our breath, sit down with each other,
take time to digest our food and the experiences of our day, if only
we could manage to slow the pace down long enough to allow us to find out
how it feels like inside our bodies....
This is exactly what yoga has done
for me for the last twenty years and what I try to teach to those from
our local community who attend classes in the yoga studio in Sandyford
Village.
Together we sit and we take the
time to find out each other’s name, we connect with our own body and we
witness the depth of our breath and then we begin to move, slowly at first
to allow us to listen in to how it feels inside our bodies, discover the
areas of tension within us and witness the inter-relationship between our
breath and the way we feel within.
We notice for example that when
we are really stressed out the breath is very shallow and that when we
allow the breath to soften and lengthen, there is a sense of peace emerging.
Gradually, we find our flow and
we move the energy to release the stress out of our body. Finally we lie
down for a deep relaxation.
It is a misconception to think
that yoga is for young intellectual women who wish to tie themselves in
knots or meditate about the meaning of life, the universe and everything.
Yoga is for everyone. For the expecting
mum who wishes to remain fit in pregnancy, for toddlers whose bodies are
hyper flexible and who somehow seem to remember the nice comfy feeling
of the deep relaxation which they had experienced when they were still
in their mother’s womb, for parents who have at long last managed to create
a small window of time for themselves, for teenagers who are
stressed out about their exams, for professionals who work
hard to build their careers and pay all the bills, for senior citizens
who have a strong desire to remain active, keep their joints lubricated
and maintain a high level of strength and flexibility, for those within
our community who are physically impaired or are recovering from a serious
illness and need to find a gentle way to exercise.
Yoga is already part of the curriculum
in some of the local schools and colleges and it is being taught in Montessori
schools, offices and in respite centres. Those in caring professions are
being encouraged to avail of yoga as a way to unwind and re-energize so
they can continue giving their time and energy to assisting those
in their care.
At a yoga class we get to know
each other from a different perspective. The suits and shoes are left outside
the door and we enter into a space where what you do for living is irrelevant
and there is no competition, not even with yourself. The role of the teacher
is to facilitate the process in which each student, regardless of their
age, gender, shape, size, level of fitness or cultural background
can enjoy time out from their daily routine, stretch, breathe, relax, meet
other members of our local community and often make long lasting friendships.
In the run up to Christmas, why
not press the pause button now and again and allow yourself time out to
unwind, re-energise and nurture yourself body & soul? Time invested
in your own well being will bring you more returns than you can possibly
imagine.... If not now, when?
Om Shanti

NATURAL CONNECTION THROUGH YOGA
As the days begin to shorten, we
focus on ways to allow the light continue to enter our hearts, and to find
time to retrieve ourselves from the fast pace of modern life into the quieter,
more tranquil state of contemplation.
Can we still find enough time to
truly meet each other, to re-establish the natural connection that is a
permanent thread through us all, no matter what size, shape, gender, age,
ethnic origin or lifestyle?
